There are currently two options for deploying Identity Server (IDS):
- Virtual IDS Appliance
- Windows Installation
Customers may already have a Physical IDS Appliance. Though Princeton Identity no longer sells Physical Appliances, we will continue to offer support and maintenance for them.
Note: Data at rest encryption will be the responsibility of the customer.
Virtual IDS Appliance
Virtual IDS Appliance is Princeton Identity's recommended deployment option. This will require existing Virtualization software. Princeton Identity provides Virtual Machine Images with IDS pre-installed. This option simplifies the setup and maintenance of Identity Server providing all that is needed in a single, easy to deploy, Virtual Machine Image.
For a listing of the latest supported virtualization software and for deployment instructions please see: Deploy a Virtual IDS Appliance
Windows Installation
For customers who do not have Virtualization Software or have specialized installation requirements, Princeton Identity also provides a Windows Installer for manual installations.
Windows installations are recommended to be installed on Windows Server versions 2016 and 2019, and can support the following databases: PostgreSQL 10, 11, 16, & 17 or Microsoft SQL Server 2017, 2019 or 2022. If you require a different database please reach out to your Business Development Manager to discuss how we can best support you.
As these installations may require additional support, please reach out to your Business Development Manager to discuss requirements and pricing.
Installation instructions for a Windows installation can be found here: Installing and Upgrading IDS on Windows
FAQs
Q: How many IDS instances do I need?
A: For the majority of scenarios, one Virtual IDS instance will be sufficient. For scenarios where the connectivity between your locations is problematic or redundancy is required, multiple Virtual IDS instances can be installed.
Q: What is the recommended sizing for a Virtual IDS instance?
A: Virtual IDS Appliance is pre-configured with an 8 core CPU, 8GB RAM, and 256 GB storage. We recommend a similar sizing for Windows Installations. We do not recommend going lower than these settings as this may degrade the performance of your system and Princeton Identity does not test with lower settings.
Q: How many people can a Virtual IDS instance have enrolled with the default specifications?
A: Please refer to the following article for the latest guidelines: Minimum Installation Requirements. If you will exceed the documented limitation for the default specification, please contact Princeton Identity for recommended sizing.
Q: Can I choose the OS for a Virtual IDS Appliance?
A: Virtual IDS Appliance only comes with Ubuntu Linux 18.04 LTS. If you require an alternative, you will need to use the Windows installation.
