This article reviews the steps to update the Identity Server (IDS) software. The steps below apply to the physical IDS100™, IDS200™, and IDS300™ appliances, virtual IDS deployments, and Windows installer deployments from version 2.15.2 or higher. For Windows installer versions prior to 2.15.2, please see Installing and Upgrading IDS on Windows.
Why Update Software?
Periodically, Princeton Identity releases new versions of our software to implement new features, enhance current features and performance, and add bug fixes. It is recommended to update to the latest versions of available software for the best technical support and to get the most out of your IDS.
The latest version of the software should be acquired directly from Princeton Identity. The update file must be accessible from the device that you use to access the IDS web page. Please follow these instructions to obtain the latest version: How to obtain the latest version of Princeton Identity Software. The name of the IDS update file will vary based upon the type of IDS you are using however the file will end in a .zip file extension.
Note that you do not need to unzip the upgrade file before carrying out the upgrade process. Also note that updates can only be done by users with the "admin" role.
This process may take between 5 and 10 minutes. During that time, the IDS will be unavailable for up to 5 minutes. Access200 devices with local cache enabled will continue to function for users present in the local cache. Any users not in the local cache will be unable to use the device until the update is complete.
It is recommended that updates are performed off peak hours.
Check Your Software Version
The IDS version information can be found in the upper right-hand corner of the IDS homepage, or on the display of the IDS physical appliance. If you have an IDS physical appliance, check your version number on the second line of the display. You'll continue to follow the steps below to access the homepage and complete the update.
In the example photo above the version number is 2.9.16.2034
The IDS homepage can be found at https://<IP-address>:8443, where "<IP-address>" should be replaced with the IP address of the IDS. If you have a physical IDS appliance this IP address is shown on the 3rd line of the display, and it is the first 4 sets of numbers displayed on that line. The final 4 characters of that line are typically "/24 D" and these are not included in the IDS IP address.
In the example photo above the IP address is 192.168.8.111
Using a web browser, navigate to the IDS homepage and log in. All user roles can view the software version.
In the top right corner of the home page under the "LOGOUT" button, you will see the version number made up of 4 sets of numbers.
In the example photo above the version number is 2.14.1.2627
Updating Your Software
From the IDS homepage, click on the "Update Software" button, underneath the "Setup" heading. Only users with the "admin" role can update the software.
From this link, you will be able to upload new versions of software. To locate your update file, click Browse for file...
Use the file explorer to navigate to the update file location, select the file and click Open. Do not navigate away from this screen during the upload or verification process.
NOTE: after you click the "Open" button the update process will begin and the IDS will become unavailable during this process.
A progress bar will appear in the window as the update is loaded onto the IDS. Once this completes, the upload will be verified. Following this, the IDS software will restart and you will lose connection to the web page.
The total process will take a couple of minutes. On a physical IDS appliance, you will see the built-in monitor change from displaying your previous software version on the second line, to displaying "Connecting...", and finally displaying the new software version. When it displays the new software version and IDS name, the update is complete.
After 3 minutes have passed, click your browser's Refresh button to display the IDS web page again. If the page is unavailable, wait a couple more minutes and refresh again. You will need to log in again after the update is complete.
Confirm Updated Version
Log in to the IDS web page and review the software version in the top right corner of the page under the "LOGOUT" button. Your version number has now changed to the latest.
The update process is now confirmed to be complete.
